Phoenix is great for all kinds of outdoor activities. Arizona is second only Colorado as far as the outdoors goes (I’ve lived all over the states.) As far as camping goes, both Sedona and Flagstaff offer GREAT opportunities

I’ve been to Jasper National PArk of the ones you mentioned, it is AMAZING. I would think any of the Alberta parks ABSOLUTELY has camping activities EVERYWHERE you go. Especially Banff which you didn’t mention.

The other parks I would be utterly surprised if they didn’t have camping activities, but perhaps during the summer months, not this time of year.

The National Military Family Association’s Operation Purple camp program will once again be accepting applications online, beginning March 16, at www.operationpurple.org.

The program aims to help military kids experience carefree fun while also learning coping skills to deal with war-related stress, and fosters relationships with others who know what they are going through because they are experiencing it, too. Operation Purple camp also helps kids to gain confidence and teaches them to be stewards of the community and of the environment.

In 2008, military children ages seven to 17 had a chance to stay at the free, week-long, overnight camp at one of 62 locations in 37 states and territories. Camps are free to all participants, thanks to support from the Sierra Club and the Sierra Club Foundation. More than 20,000 kids have participated in the program since its inception.

War takes its toll not only on the troops who fight in the field, but also on the Families who wait and worry at home. More than 155,000 kids have at least one parent who is deployed in the war on terrorism. That number doesn’t include those experiencing routine, but often lengthy, deployments and separations from loved ones through military service. Many of these children have more than one parent or Family member deployed.

The Operation Purple camp program, created in 2004, imparts the message on these young heroes that they serve, too.

Any military child can apply, but priority is given to those who have a parent, guardian, or Family household member deployed between September 2008 and December 2009. If all spaces are not filled with campers who meet the deployment criteria, the remaining camp slots are filled with any military child from any service branch, the National Guard, Reserve, U.S. Public Health Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association.

Fishing,for sure. If They are ages 4-9ish get them a small kids fishing poll and take them to the pond or lake were you arecamping and teach them how to fish. If you can fish along with them. This will encourage them and make them more intrusted in fishing. HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!

c. When you campout, make sure that your children fully understand the essence of an outdoor experience. When taking them out, make sure that each experience will make them familiar with the outdoors so they will be at ease during the night. Try to help them get rid of their fears related to camping out. Teach them well about respecting and preserving nature. Make sure that they are also fully equipped with the necessary outdoor skills and ethics needed in adapting to wildlife and interacting with other campers. Never forget to teach them first aid practices.

d. Plan activities and chores that are suitable for children. When you camp out, make sure that you assign actual camp chores for each of your children. Match their responsibilities with their age and their physical capabilities. Among the most common chores that you can assign are collecting firewood, helping your prepare the food and snacks, helping you set up the tent by hammering tent stacks, filling the water containers, picking fruits, and others.

However, whenever you assign tasks, make the chores fun and engaging. Turn the simple activities into contests and give corresponding awards. As for the camping activities, you can include day hikes in the woods or low mountains, fishing, picnics, and scavenger hunts.

BACKSTORY: Carolyn really wanted to go camping at least one more time this season so that she can take the kitties while they are still young. After being rained out a few weeks ago, Carolyn was determined to go no matter what. The forecast called for rain — but only 0.1 inch during the day. Carolyn was pissed. After much convincing, we ended up below our six-person quorum, but still had a good crowd, with Tabbitha, Eli, Carolyn, Clint, and even Evan! Good times.

Unfortunately, it did rain on us. Eli set up Carolyn’s small tarp with some help from Evan and Carolyn, and we spent a good amount of time huddled underneath it. But this was only at night time. And it didn’t rain hard — you could go potty without an umbrella and stay relatively dry. Eventually we all realized we couldn’t keep our eyes open. We made a pact to take a 1-hour nap, and we all went to our separate tents. When Carolyn woke up several hours later, she heard the rain was still at it, and decided not to try to wake anyone up. Tabbitha apparently got up really early and somehow got soaked. She was mostly dry by the time everyone else woke up.

Thus, most of our pictures are from the next day. The next day was dry, beautiful, and we spent quite some time (8:30AM-2PMish) there. In the end, we were there for 27 hours, and only awake and being rained on for about 4 of them. It wasn’t the end of the world — We ate like kings and had more fun than if we’d stayed in!

20070915 – Camping in Elizabeth Furnace with Beavis – 136-3635 – Beavis in the hammock

Beavis was placed into the hammock several times. After 5 to 10 trials, he was able to get out in under 10 seconds. He quickly learned that if you walked to the end of the hammock, it is more taut, and so he is able to get better footing to jump out. In this YouTube video, however, he only got out by dumb luck, and was still learning. I think it’s good to give young animals dexterity and spatial challenges for the same reasons parents give their babies puzzles and toys. It also helps desensitize them some, preventing "acute wussiness", which plagues so many kitties that hide under the bed whenever guests come. Not our cats! They come out and meet our guests! (Except the rejected kitten…)

I actually co-run a kids camp and one of our week sessions is Around the World in Just 5 Days. Some of our activities include the kids making their own pizza (very easy, just buy pre-made dough, pizza sauce, cheese and/or pepperoni), making a paper mache paper bag pinata for the kids to break on Friday, making grass skirts using streamers and masking tape and teaching them a simple hula. These are just some ideas that have been successful in previous years. Hope it helps and have fun!

Unlike Misfit, Beavis really liked camping. (We didn’t have to tie him to the tree; we just let him run around with his harnass on. If he really tried to run away, he wouldn’t get more than 30 feet before getting tangled up. It’s a good security/liberty compromise.) But little did we know that he would get to meet A TOAD!

Often, fat kids and teenagers get caught up in a vicious cycle since their social lives become more marginalized as their weight keep adding up. Some children will avoid overweight kids and even taunt and bully them. So overweight children seldom participate in social activities because they are unfit or ostracized and self-consciousness about their overweight appearance and this will lead to less physical activity. Since these children are less active, then the tendency to put on weight is even greater.

When an overweight child has normal weight siblings the stress on them will become even more unbearable. There will comparisons made on them which is a very traumatic and depressive for the child. This can lead to terrible permanent emotional scars.

At a good weight loss camp, children will be left out of any activities. The camps are usually structured in such a way so that everyone has to join in its fun programs and social activities. Since these fat kids usually opt out of activities, their choice should be between camp activities, not whether they join in or not.

Children will be exposed to many sports and taught athletic skills in a non-competitive environment. There will also be enrichment programs arts & crafts, confidence building and team building to help them integrate into the society. They will also be taught how to choose healthy and balanced meals and nutritional facts. The benefits from a vacation at a weight loss camp will last a lifetime.

I work for a day camp that works with kids with mental and physical disabilities. I am a camp counselor and in charge of keeping the kids entertained when we are not doing camp activities. We were told at the training that each activity should be no longer than 15 minutes. I have spent hours and hours coming up with ideas and crafts, but only about three weeks worth of activity and camp is six weeks long. If you have any activities or crafts I would be oh so grateful.

Have you thought of any simple food activities, like decorating cookies?

For students who are able (if you have space), you could have physical activities such as relay racing, obstacle course, etc.

You could play parachute games.

Bubbles are fun to use, and there are recipes to make them.

You can have story time.

You could sing songs together, especially interactive ones where they join in.

If they are young enough to like it, you could have a teddy bear’s picnic.

You could have some kind of theme, like “Oceans” and do crafts and activities around that. Decorate the space so it looks like an ocean (or forest, or desert, or island, or whatever).

I would not go if i were you. but at the same time, it may be the last time for a while that you get to enjoy some recreational activities before the babies arrive. The motor boat might be too bumpy and it may cause your water to break. Also, at the end of pregnancy, it gets to be very, very hard to sleep even in a bed. You will be up peeing in the night a couple of times, and that sucks when you’re camping. Also, if you end up going, bring an air mattress or whatever is the very most comfortable thing you have to sleep on.

Oh, the days when summer camps were all the rage! Every year, thousands of girls either dread or look forward to attending several days or several weeks at a girl’s summer camp. * Wear a helmet for any hazardous activity while at summer camp.
