Camping can be very relaxing. The feeling that you are closer to nature can give anyone such a joy. This is why a lot of people go camping during the weekends or holidays together with their families or friends. A nice bonfire can accentuate the nature’s feel at night together with some camping activities like singing around the fire or marshmallow eating. It is always recommendable to research or find a free camping ground for traveler trailer before going for your trip. This will save you a lot of time and money since you do not have to drive around and ask around to find a free camping site. There are some websites especially for campers that offer addresses of camp sites that offer free parking for your trailer. Also, a map will show you the exact location and the featured scenery on various camp sites.

If you are already on the road, it will be best to look for camp ground with “open to the public” signs since some private sites will ask you for a parking fee and camping fees. If you prefer paying for these fees, expect that you will not be charged with the minimum fee.

It is also a great idea to call the local police station of the area you are currently traveling. These people can provide you with more information about the camping sites in their particular area as well as the safety guidelines that you will need.

Things to consider when you are finding a free camping site

Make sure that you consider the location where you camp, if traveling with a trailer, be sure to park near the roads in case an emergency occurred.

It is best for you to be familiar with the location and to check the security of the premises before settling down. Ask for the local’s police number and be sure you know where the nearest hospital is located.

Also, take note of the season; since the camping site is free you can expect a lot of campers especially during the holiday season. This situation can lessen your relaxation but will definitely add up fun to your camping experience.

You can go to http://texasstateparks.com and look up the different camp grounds in Texas. I’m sure New Mexico has a similar site. New Mexico would probably have better hiking places. We went there once with the Boy Scouts. It was Camp Rand. It is a higher elevation than we were used to in Texas. Took the adults a couple of days to get used to it. You might have to try several locations over the years to find the one site that really fits you best. Happy Camping.

I want to be very remote, i like hiking, swimming so if there was a place that can offer both i’d be thrilled… I can also do the coast… I wonder if there are any places that can offer free primitive camping right on the beach ?

Planning your Oregon Camping Trip

One of the great things about planning an Oregon camping trip is the number of options visitors have, both in things to do and see and in where to stay. With nearly 100 state and federal Oregon campgrounds and even more privately owned facilities, the challenge won’t be finding Oregon campgrounds, it will be deciding which ones to choose.

When to Go

For most people, work and school schedules often help determine when they can take an Oregon vacation. Those with kids typically have to wait for the summer months if they want to visit for more than a few days. For most this works out great because Oregon weather is at its warmest, and it is the peak of the travel season so all the Oregon campgrounds and attractions are open. Reservations are recommended during the summer months as many of the most popular campgrounds tend to fill up fast.

Many festivals are held in the summer, wild and cultivated flowers are in bloom, and there is even a resident group of whales along the coast for those that want to experience Oregon’s legendary whale watching.

Whale watching is at its peak in March, making spring an ideal time to visit Oregon, especially the coastal area. Snowmelt also increases the water levels in rivers, creating churning rapids just waiting to be kayaked or rafted.

Autumn is a good time to visit if you plan to fish Oregon coastal rivers and streams. Steelhead and salmon enter these waters to spawn beginning in September and continuing into late fall. Forest Service offices provide information on fishing conditions in their areas, as do websites for the local communities.

Fall is also a good time to visit one of Oregon’s vineyards. The Willamette Valley, slightly inland from Oregon’s northwest coast, is known as wine country, and there are numerous wineries that offer tours and tastings.

In addition to fishing and wine tasting, the fall foliage is in full color and the Oregon camping sites are typically less crowded than in summer months. Contact the Oregon Fall Foliage Hotline at 1-800-547-5445 to find peak color times for the areas you plan to visit.

Winter is the perfect time to visit Oregon if you like skiing, snowboarding, and other snow activities. In the winter months, average inland daytime temperatures are often in the 40s. A second whale migration in December through January makes a winter trip to the Oregon coast appealing as well. The ocean climate helps keep temperatures relatively mild, and winter camping in Oregon can be cozy and comfortable with proper clothing and camping equipment. Even in mid January, temperatures often reach into the 50s in the coastal areas.

Many of the state park campgrounds remain open year round although running water may not be available. Fewer families come to Oregon in the winter months, so if you like quiet getaways, this may be the best time to visit Oregon.

Choosing Oregon Camping Sites

City living: Portland, Eugene and several other larger cities in Oregon have numerous campsites close to town for those that want to be close to the action but still enjoy the fun of RV travel or tenting it. Even Oregon’s more populated areas are surrounded by forests, mountains, and waterways, so finding a natural setting is not difficult.

Private campgrounds in Oregon: There are hundreds of private campgrounds throughout all areas of Oregon. Some cater to families with children and offer playgrounds, activities, and other kid-friendly features. Others are more basic or focus on nature and peaceful settings. No matter what your areas of interest and your camping style, you can likely find a private campground to fit your needs. Begin by contacting visitor information offices or city chambers of commerce in the area of the state you plan to visit.

Oregon state park camping: The number of state parks, scenic sites and recreation areas in Oregon is simply amazing. While some of these are day use only facilities, many provide overnight camping with both tent and RV sites. Often, these Oregon state park camping sites are located in some of the state’s most beautiful scenery, and fees are typically comparable or less than those at privately owned campgrounds.

For a truly unique experience, some Oregon state park camping areas offer camping in tepees, yurts and covered wagons. What to Bring When Camping in Oregon

In addition to the standard food, water, clothing, first aid items and camping equipment, it is advisable to also include:

• a hat

• sweatshirts and jackets for layering

• a plastic garbage bag, to use as a rain poncho just in case

• a flashlight

• bug repellent

• a pocket mirror (for signaling if you get lost)

• a whistle

Check all your equipment before you leave to make sure it works properly and is in good condition. Mabira Forest Reserve

Mabira Central Forest reserve is one OF Uganda’s largest surviving natural Forest covering an area of 306sqkm. The forest is a natural Habitat of 312 species of trees including the endangered Cordia Milllenii, Mililia Exclesa, the Warbhugia Ugandenesis which has medicinal properties and its known to cure over forty ailments; and the vulnerable prunus Africana.

Mabira is also home of 315 species of Bird such as the Nahan’s Francolin, cassin Hawk Eagle, the forest wood hoope, the purple throated cuckoo, the tit hylia, the red headed blue bill, the black bellied seed cracker, the shinning blue king fisher and many more. Some of these species can only be found in Mabira forest and no where else.

Other unique features to be explored in the forest Reserve include 218 butterfly species, 97 moths species,23 small mammal species especially primate species of Monkey clan and the spectacular Griffin falls.

Accommodation:

Accommodation in the Forest Reserve is available in 3 bandas which can accommodate a maximum of 10 guests at the eco tourism site near Najjembe Trading Centre. The bandas are self –catering although some light meals can be prepared for you by the House Keeper. There is also a camping ground near site for do it yourself caravans at a modest fee.

Accessibility

Mabira Central Forest Reserve is located on the main Kampala- Jinja High in Mukono District. It is 54km from the city centre of Kampala and 26km from Jinja town. The eco- tourism site s about half a kilometer from the road head along a short dirt road off the Najjembe Trading center. The forest is therefore accessible by all vehicles throughout the year.

Other services

Specialized, knowledgeable and courteous local guides are on site ready to take you for an exciting interpretative forest walk.

Mabira Eco-Tourism Drama group, a community interest group entertains visitors with cultural music, Dance and Drama. The Najjembe women’s craft group ensures that visitors take a souvenir home in form of handicrafts like baskets, mats, handbags, and bedcovers all made out of local materials. The Mabira forest integrated Community Organization (MAFICO), a local non government organization, is in advanced stages of developing a community Eco-Tourism site at the Griffin falls located 20kms from the Najjembe visitor reception centre.

These forests, found on the legendary Ssesse islands, are described as medium altitude moist forests. They form a belt along the lake and the lower ridges with a gentle slope from the lake shore to the centre. However, the forest walks are not strenuous.

The forest trails are well developed, one particular trail that visitors to Lutoboka should not miss stretches from the landing site up to the fort where the explorer Henry Murton Stanley pitched camp on his way to the famed mountains of the moon.

There are 31 gazette Forest Reserve is 378 hectares, Kampala forest Reserve is 139Hectare and Bunjazi forest reserve is 80 Hectares.

The Ssesse Islands are a group of 84 islands famous for their unexplored forests some of which are completely uninhabited. They are a natural habitat for rare and endemic birds and butterflies. Primate species especially the monkeys abound. This rich and virgin eco system serenely blends into the aquatic expanse of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest

Lake, making these forest reserves a must visit.

Activities in the forest reserve include Forest walks, bird watching, primate identification and butterfly identification. In addition, visitors can also enjoy sailing, boating, fishing and sun bathing along the lake shore.

Accommodation

Accomodation in the reserves especially Lutoboka is largely in the hands of private developers. There are a number of well developed beaches and resorts for both the upper market and Middle market. Budget travelers are advised to seek modest lodge accommodation readily available in Kalangala town council a few kilometers from Lutoboka.

Accessibility

Accessibility to the Islands is by Ship from Nakiwogo Landing site near Entebbe at exactly 14 hours daily. The ship starts its return journey from Lutoboka landing site at exactly 8:00am.

Alternatively, one may approach the islands by ferry from Bukakata/ Kachanga landing site near Masaka. The Ferry docks at Luku landing site near Kalangala, four times a day starting at 8:00am

Kashoya –Kitomi Central Forest Reserve

Located 35 km from Bushenyi, Kasyoha- Kitomi Central forest Reserve is 433sq.Kiliometers. Ecotourism in the reserve is just beginning to develop under the umbrella of Ndekye Women’ Development Association. The main attractions in the reserve include primates such as chimpanzees, blue monkeys, Red tailed monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys and Baboons. The reserve also boasts of spectacular crater lakes such as the twin lakes of Kamweru and Kyema as well as transparent Lake Kamunzuku. Being adjacent to Queen Elizabeth National Park, the reserve hosts a number of small mammals like duikers, antelopes, bush pigs and the Uganda Kob.

Migratory Elephants can occasionally be seen. Other attractions in the reserve include waterfalls, canoeing, bird watching, sight seeing, conservation education, camping and community walks.

A three – hour walking trail has been developed from the camping site at magambo to the transparent Lake Kamunzuku.

Facilities in the reserve are still modest with a camping site at Magambo Parish headquarters overlooking the amazing twin lakes. Clients are advised to bring tents with them for camping in this place and transport, a four wheel drive is a must have.

Budongo Central Forest Reserve

Budongo Central Forest Reserve is the largest surviving Natural forest in Uganda with a total surface area of 825sq. kilometers. It straddles across three districts of Masindi, Hoima and the newly created Bulisa district. This is a true forest, very little illegal activity and encroachment has ensured that the forest remains as natural as it can be.

Visitors seeking the serenity and calmness are being next to nature should opt for Budongo. It is professionally preserved and managed by National Forest authority, it’s divided into three zones its strict Nature Reserve is the oldest in the country while its buffer zone allows Eco- Tourism and research to prosper and its production zone caters for commercial activities.

Budongo has two Eco- Tourism sites namely Kaniyo- Pabidi and Busingiro

Kaniyo-Pabidi Eco-Tourism Site

Attractions

Kaniyo Pabidi is situated in the North Eastern part of Budongo Forest Reserve. It is a natural habitat of about 120chimpanzees. However, only one group consisting of about 30 chimpanzees has been fully habituated for Eco-Tourism purposes. There are also other primate species such as the black and white colobus monkey, the Red tailed monkey, Blue Monkey, Vervet monkey and baboons. Part of kaniyo pabidi is contagious with Murchison falls National parks and Bugungu wildlife reserve which are managed by Uganda Wild life Authority. Hence, some savannah grassland species can be sighted in Kaniyo pabidi. These include Bush bucks, Red and blue Duiker, bush pigs, warthogs, lions, water bucks and buffaloes. There is prolific birdlife especially the chocolate –backed king fisher and the pruvels eladosis. This area is home of a variety of tree species are known to possess medicinal qualities. Butterflies, moths, and Tropical flowers are abundant.

Forest trails at this site are well developed and well maintained for tourist purposes. Tourist activities include chimp tracking, bird watching, forest walks, conservation education, chimpanzee habituation and camping.

Accommodation

The Jane Goodall institute has completed modern Tourist cabins and dormitory accommodation for middle and upper markets. Boomu conservation and crafts and women’s association operates simple accommodation Bandas near the Park Entry Gate

Accessibility

Kaniyo-Pabidi ecotourism site is located approximately 220km. From Kampala via Masindi which is 29km away. The site is along the secondary road that connects Masindi with Paraa. It is roughly 5 km. From the Murchison Park Boundary and entry gate.

Other Services

There are two local community organizations involved in Eco Tourism near Kaniyo- Pabidi: Boomu conservation and craft women’s association and Asera Azora women’s group. They provide handicrafts, community walks, cooking walks, simple traditional Accomodation and camping Kaniyo pabidi has knowledgeable, experienced and welcoming guides who offer interpretation and guiding services.

Busingiro Eco-Tourism Site

Attractions

Busingiro Eco Tourism site is located in the South Western part of Budongo forest Reserve, Like Kaniyo- Pabidi this area is a habitat of several primate species including chimpanzees, monkeys and baboons. However, the chimpanzees in Busingiro are not yet habituated for visitor tracking. Mahogany, iron wood, fig trees stranglers and a host of medicinal trees form the bulk of floral species in this seemingly untouched natural forest. Birds, butterflies, reptiles, small mammals and other Micro Organism form the Eco- system that that makes this particular site enviable. Visitor should not miss the proverbial Royal Mile. This is one of the highlights of Busingiro. The Royal Mile is a stretch of one mile with a collection of all the tree species found in Budongo Forest Reserve. King Kabalega, the former king of Bunyoro used to frequent this segment for relaxation with his queen. The segment derives its name from these Royal visits. The segment is magnificent by the National Forestry Authority for historical, aesthetic and recreational reasons. Activities in Busingiro include forest walks, bird watching, primate identification, conservation education, Research, and butterfly identification among others. There is a primate research station on the site of old sawmill at Sonso. The forest trails at this site are well developed and well maintained for tourist purposes.

Accommodation

Accommodation at Busingiro consists mainly at camping facilities. However, the Jane Goodall institute in the process of renovating and refurbishing the tourist Bandas to house at least ten visitors.

Accessibility

The site is located to the west of Masindi. It’s approximately 47 km. from Masindi Town via Kinyara and Nyabyebya. Masindi its self is approximately 200km from Kampala on a good tarmac Road. Busingiro is on the earth Road that connects Masindi with Paraa via Bulisa on the shore of Lake Albert.

Mpanga Central Forest Reserve

Attractions

Mpanga Central Forest Reserve is a natural Forest with unique Tree species and other flora. Among the outstanding tree species are the celtis family species with large buttresses, the Ficus family and Mahogany.

The forest also boasts of number primates especially the red tailed monkeys, Nocturnal visits can be arranged to see the bush babies.

There is an array of birdlife including the Russ’ Turaco, Weaver- birds, the grey parrot, Owls, Hornbills and Cuckoos.

The forest is also home to variety of butterflies and moths.

The main activities in the forest include forest walks and forest exploration, bird watching and identification, primate watching and butterfly identification.

The forest trails are well developed into four main routings namely; the baseline trails, the hornbill trail, The Butterfly Trail, and the family trail each with unique features and experiences.

Accommodation

There is a basic Accommodation at visitor reception Central at Mpanga under the management of the National Foresty Authority. One Tourist Banda, a self- contained duplex, a double room and dormitory on the main office block can accommodate visitors at Mpanga. There is also a tent for hire at a modest fee.

These are self- catering facilities although light meals can be ordered from the house caretaker.

Accessibility

Located in Mpigi District 37km from the city centre of Kampala, the forest Reserve is easily accessible through the main Kampala –Masaka highway. The Eco-Tourism site is approximately 1 km from the road head using a well-surfaced dirt road. The access therefore is on a tarmac road and the good dirt is passable through out the year.

Bugoma Eco Tourism Site

Bugoma Central Forest Reserve is located in Hoima District. It covers a total surface area of 41,144 hectares.

Eco- Tourism in the Reserve is being spearheaded by African Nature Conservation Expeditions, a private firm with vast experience in Tourism development. The firm is in advanced stages of infrastructure development at a former Forest station. 10 Tourist Bandas to house a minimum of 10 visitors per night are nearing completion. In addition, another 10 luxury Tented Camps exclusively for the upper market are ready.

The site is endowed with variety of Tourist Attractions such as Chimpanzees, monkeys, Reptiles, Birds and Butterflies and trees totaling 30km long divided into loops of 200 metres each have been developed. The reserve is near the Oil Exploration sites which has precipitated the migration of many grassland species due to Habitat disturbance. Those that can occasionally be seen include Uganda Kobs, Buffaloes and elephants. The reserve is accessible through a dirt Road 70km away from Hoima Township. Hoima is approximately 200km from Kampala. There is also an airstrip for light aircrafts at Kisaru Tea Estates 12km from Bugoma Ecotourism site. Yosemite National Park: a Camping Guide

Yosemite National Park – a priceless natural beauty of sculpted granite mountains, glacier-carved valleys, rushing streams, shimmering lakes and tumbling waterfalls.

The magnificent Yosemite vacation site is located in the central Sierra Nevada of California about 150 miles east of San Francisco. Yosemite Park’s 750,000 acres, 1,200 square miles contain thousands of lakes and ponds, 1,600 miles of streams and creeks, 800 miles of hiking trails and 350 miles of roads. Two picturesque rivers, the Tuolumne and the Merced, flow westward from the Yosemite into the Central Valley of California.

Yosemite National Park is open 365 days a year, 24 hours each day. Upon payment of an entrance fee, visitors are permitted to drive in and through Yosemite Valley without any requirement for reservations. There are five main entrances to the Park:

1. The South Entrance – Highway 41 North from Fresno.

2. Arch Rock Entrance – Highway 140 West from Merced.

3. Big Oak Flat Entrance – Highway 120 West from Modesto and Manteca.

4. Tioga Pass Entrance – Highway 120 East from Lee Vining and Highway 395.

5. Hetch Hetchy Entrance – Hetch Hetchy Road from Evergreen Road

west of the Big Oak Flat Entrance.

Current road conditions should be checked prior to travelling and visitors are advised that chains may be required anytime from October through April. Public transportation to the national park is also available. Check commercial airlines, bus and train services for schedules.

It is possible to enjoy a short Yosemite vacation of two to three days touring some of the Valley’s main scenic attractions by automobile or shuttle bus. But to really experience this magnificent natural sanctuary, visitors should take full advantage of Yosemite camping and lodging facilities. Visitors can choose three basic types of accommodation – a concession-operated Yosemite lodging facility, a Yosemite national campground , or wilderness camping.

DNC Parks and Resorts operate Yosemite lodging facilities under contract with the National Park Service. These Park lodging facilities range from simple tent cabins to luxury rooms in The Ahwahnee to the High Sierra Camps. For online reservations for Yosemite park lodging, prices and descriptions, check out the DNC Web site. Reservations are available 366 days in advance and are recommended for the peak summer Yosemite vacation months.

Yosemite National Park camping , either by RV or tenting, is by far the most popular way to experience the remarkable beauty and scenic variety of this world heritage site. Yosemite Park has 13 campgrounds of which seven are on a reservation-only system. Yosemite campground reservations are absolutely essential during the busiest season from April through September.

However, the growing demand for Yosemite campgrounds means that even the campgrounds on a first-come, first-served basis are already filled as early as noon from May through September. Visitors are advised that there is a limit to the size of recreational vehicles and/or trailers permitted on Yosemite campgrounds. The maximum length is 40 feet. This information should be confirmed when making Yosemite camping reservations. Sites are rented on a “per person” basis up to a maximum of six persons per campsite, regardless of the number of people in your party.

The following Yosemite campgrounds require reservations:

• Upper Pines: Open all year.

• Lower Pines: Open from March to October.

• North Pines: Open from April to September.

• Wawona: Open all year. Reservations required May through September.

• Hodgdon Meadow: Open all year. Reservations required May through September.

• Crane Flat: Open June to September.

• Tuolumne Meadows: Open July to September. This is the only Yosemite campground where reservations are required for only 50 percent of its campsites. Tuolumne Meadows also has 25 walk-in sites available for backpackers and other visitors without vehicles.

Six Yosemite campgrounds are on a first-come, first-saved basis and do not require reservations. Visitors should be advised that these campgrounds are usually filled by noon of each day during the peak summer months.

• Camp 4: Open all year.

• Tamarack Flat: Open from June until early September

• Bridalveil Creek: Open from July to early September.

• White Wolf, Yosemite Creek: Open from July to early September.

• Porcupine Flat: Open from July to early September.
Yosemite campground reservations are available in blocks for up to a maximum time of one month per calendar year, and must be made as early as five months in advance on the 15th of each month through the National Park Reservation System (NPRS). Camping fees may change from year to year. It should be noted that the majority of Yosemite campground reservations are filled by noon hour on the designated reservation dates.

Very occasionally, cancellations might still make it possible to obtain a reserved campsite. Visitors are advised to check the first-come, first-served Yosemite campgrounds. However, during the month of May these camping sites are generally difficult to obtain. If crowded conditions would mean an uncomfortable camping Yosemite experience, visitors are cautioned that Memorial Day weekend is the most popular Yosemite vacation weekend of the year.

Online reservations can made through http://reservations.nps.gov/ from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Yosemite campground reservations may be made by telephone: 800-436-7275 within in the United States; 301-722-1257 outside the United States; 888-530-9796 for TDD users. Alternatively, requests can be made by letter to NPRS, P.O. Box 1600. Cumberland, MD 21502.

Since written requests for reserved Yosemite campgrounds are not processed until the fifteenth of each month, the same day telephone and online requests are also being processed; the following information should be included:

• name of the Yosemite campground

• camping equipment to be used (RV, tent, etc.)

• method of payment.

Be advised that written requests for Yosemite camping reservations must be made so that they are received no sooner than two weeks prior to the fifteenth of each month. It is important to note that this is the reservation date, not your planned arrival date.

For example, if you would like to camp anytime from June 15 to July 14, the first day to make Yosemite campground reservations is February 15. If you plan to camp anytime from July 15 to August 14, the first day to make reservations is March 15, and so on. In other words, if you plan a Yosemite vacation and wish to stay in one of the Yosemite campgrounds, reservations can only be made on the 15 of each calendar month, five months in advance of your planned arrival date.

When is the best time for a Yosemite vacation? Is weather an important factor for you? Do you prefer a quieter vacation experience? Which areas of Yosemite National Park do you wish to see?

The summer season (June through September) is the peak Yosemite vacation period. Some of the more popular places to visit include the large, open sub-alpine Tuolumne Meadows along the winding Tuolumne River, the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, the breath-taking outlook at Glacier Point and the Half-Dome, and the silvery mists of Bridalveil Fall. The Yosemite Valley offers endless opportunities to explore its world-renowned spectacular waterfalls, granite cliffs, and unusual rock formations. Hetch Hetchy, the lesser-known twin to Yosemite Valley, is home to equally magnificent scenery, as well as the starting point for many of the less-used wilderness trails.

The fall season (October and November) has fewer visitors, but still permits access to large areas of the park during the month of October, and sometimes into November. Since most of the trees in Yosemite are evergreens, the park is not known for its spectacular fall colors. However, if the weather remains seasonable, a Yosemite vacation still presents ample opportunity to explore the Park’s exquisite scenery at greater leisure. Short-term closures may occur because of weather conditions although Yosemite Valley and Wawona remain open all year.

The winter season (December through March) is a Yosemite vacation opportunity for those who enjoy skiing and solitude. While Yosemite Valley and Wawona remain accessible year-round, the Tioga Road and roads between Crane Flat and Tioga Pass, including the Tuolumne Meadows are closed. From mid-December through early April, the Glacier Point/Badger Pass Road is plowed to permit access to the popular downhill and cross-country skiing areas.

The spring season (April and May) is the best time to view the park’s spectacular waterfalls. As warmer weather begins to melt the snow, creeks and streams are rushing with water, and many unnamed waterfalls and cascades can be seen all along the rim of Yosemite Valley. Roads closed during the winter season remain inaccessible.

About 95 percent of Yosemite National Park was designated as wilderness in 1984. Wilderness camping is a viable alternative Yosemite vacation. Camping permits are required year-round for all overnight trips into the park’s wilderness country. However, unlike other Yosemite campgrounds and lodging facilities, these wilderness camping permits are free. For those who prefer to spend a Yosemite vacation day-hiking along some of the park’s 800 miles of trails (without an overnight stay), no permits are needed. A trailhead quota system limits the number of hikers beginning from each trailhead per day.

New information is available and updated regularly on the park’s Web site at www.nps.gov/yose. For more detailed information about different areas of the park, consult the Yosemite Guide newspaper. For schedules of current activities, facilities, fees and services check Yosemite Today. Both publications are free and can be obtained at the park’s entrance stations, at visitor centers, and are also posted on the park’s Web site.

its at the confluence of the two forks of the american and that is where a lot of folks head upstream from to raft the river. The feds just announced that they will no longer be funding the park so you better head there before they close the place.

Kilimanjaro, Swimming pools and enough amenities making your stay very comfortable and spiritually rewarding. But of course if you are traveling on a budget, you could try the Namanga River Hotel, Campi ya Kazi, or the Nyati Safari camp, all with nice tented camps erected under acacia trees, giving you the advantage of the nice scenic view of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The Tsavo National Park offers a wide range of wild life and birds within the dense vegetation, swamps, remarkable rolling hills, volcanic caves and huge rocks. Here you will find tented camps with basic amenities like running water, bathrooms, mosquito nets, bedding and toilet facilities. Unlike in the Amboseli, one will have to make arrangement for lunch and dinner at nearby lodges and hotels. However a few of them have luxurious tented camps but are a bit more costly to rent. There are good places where you can arrange for tented camps like the Severin Safari Camp in Mombasa, the Voyager Safari Camp at the Zimani Gate, the Finch Hatton’s Safari Camp lacated on the western side of the Tsavo National Park and the Satao Camp on the banks of the Voi River

This list would not be complete without reference to the Kenyan coastal town of Mombasa. This town is home to the Simba Hills National park where you can watch elephants, antelopes and zebras grazing on the grasslands, the sandy beaches of Malindi, the Watamu marine National Park and the age old Lamu town. You are sure to be treated to the best tented camps at the Makurumuji Tented Camping site at the Simba hills National Park, the Shompole Camping site on Lake Magadi which offers a Jacuzzi to keep you cool From the warm breezes.

We’ve made a lot of good memories from our camping trips. We’ve always gone up in the mountains and found great camping hiking spots either at designated campgrounds that offer water for washing, and some type of restroom (out house or rest-stop type), and garbage cans, or places where there were no creature comforts at all. We always camped by streams, lakes, or rivers during the summer months.

If you intend to have a successful camping experience, planning is important. As a retired Army Airborne Ranger, who has had to live out of a ruck (back pack) for many days, having the right camping gear when you’re camping will make the experience that much more enjoyable.
The best camping tents for families are tents that have separate rooms. Since we have two children our tent has three rooms — my wife and I sleep in a room, the kids sleep in a room, and the entrance room is for dressing and storage. We use a combination of foam and inflatable mattresses. We use rectangular sleeping bags that you can zip together for the wife and I, and the kids have their own individual bags. Bring extra blankets for chilly nights. We also use poncho liners for the kids to use inside their sleeping bags. We’ve had our tent for over 15 years and average 2-3 camping trips each summer.

We also take a couple of tarps. We use one tarp on the ground under the tent and make it long enough to have about 8 feet in front of the tent door. We take our shoes/boots off outside to keep the inside of the tent as clean as possible. We bring a small folding stool to place outside the tent door to help with putting shoes on. The second tarp is used to cover our kitchen/cooking gear if it rains.
We use two camping stoves – one uses propane (which we mainly use for heating water for hot drinks and washing) and the other is a 2 burner stove and uses fuel, which does not burn as hot. We use this one for cooking bacon, pancakes, eggs, etc. Bring a couple of frying pans, and camping pots/pans – remember to bring a spatula if you’re going to cook pancakes or eggs.

We always start a fire in the morning(for warmth) and in the evening, for cooking. Bring a collapsible grate to put over the fire if you plan on laying anything on it to cook or heat up. We make pointed sticks by cutting small branches from nearby trees for the polish dogs or bratwurst – so bring a couple of knives. We cut our own wood from the dead branches and logs you find near the campground. We bring an axe and small saw with a folding blade to get the wood the right size to fit in the fire pit.

Here are the basics of camping gear to bring:
Tent with rain fly, tarp, tent stakes, and hammer
Sleeping gear to include mattresses – inflatable or foam, blankets (poncho liners), and pillows
Cooking/kitchen equipment – camping stoves, folding camping table, frying pans, pots to heat water and cook in, paper plates, bowls, and utensils, napkins, paper towels, wash rags, towels, cutlery, large spoons, tongs, can opener, lighters, tin foil, plastic wash basin, scouring pads, disposable wipes, detergent, plastic storage bags, and trash bags. We pack this in see-though plastic tubs with folding lids. We pack most of our non-cooler food in these types of containers, too.

Fire pit necessities – if you plan on scrounging your own wood from the forest floor – axe, folding saw, gloves, newspaper for fire starting, lighter, a folding grate (campfire tripod), and a folding shovel.

Personal hygiene – soap, wash cloths, towels (dark in color), shampoo and shower shoes (if your campground has a shower), toothpaste, and toilet paper.

Safety equipment – flashlights, lantern, spare batteries, cell phone with car charger, map of the area, first aid kit, compass or GPS, and plenty of drinking water.

These are some of the items you’ll need to have an enjoyable camping trip. After your first trip, you’ll be able to fine-tune your list. Tent camping takes a lot of prep work, but it is so worth it for the memories you’ll always have.

Almost 11 miles of well-marked trails lead to scenic overlooks, spring-fed ponds, prime birding habitat and 40 primitive backpack camping sites. Located along the Sabinal River, this 2208-acre park is an inspiring mixture of sheer limestone cliffs, deep canyons, dense woodlands, and numerous clear streams. In this video, we camped at Primitive Area B and hiked throughout the park. We were the only campers at Area B. 19-21 Mar 2010 — Troop 203 Camp-out at Maquoketa Caves State Park, 18 scouts and 11 scouters – Friday at arrival it was cloudy & in the mid 30s after the tents were set up there were rain sprinkles and it started snowing at about 10:30 PM — Saturday woke up to 3 inches of snow — Sunday morning sunny * A few of us arrived in the late morning to set up camp and make sure we got one of the group sites there was a troop from Chicago there already setting up (same troop we saw in previous years) expecting 50 scouts & 28 scouters * There are only 2 group area camp sites and both are on a slope (area A is more open than area B, but the amount of slope is less, making it the better choice) — we set up in the B area but saw the ranger & he indicated that there would be 6 scout troops there and said we could go to the flat & treed area in the in the open camp area so we set up in the place we had used before the group areas were built — much more like camping * Woke up to 3 inches of wet, heavy snow on the tents — most of the tents are 3 season which means they are not built for a snow load — the weight of the snow brings the tent tops down on the campers inside — so through the night the campers have to shake off the snow to get the tents to stand up again * On Saturday we used the CCC built (2 sided) stone pavilion with a 48 inch stone fireplace — Johnny brought a load of fire wood and kept the fire going all day as well as closing in one of the open walls with a tarp …

Summer camping in Australia

During the summer, my family always goes camping in Australia. Each year we choose a different location. This year my dad had picked out a camping site that he hoped would be perfect. I wish we had camped somewhere else, anywhere else.

We arrived at our camping site and found that it was not too far from a caravan park. We made up our campground and prepared to have a lot of fun. After clearing our ground area of debris, we started a nice big fire and cooked dinner. After it got dark, we put marshmallows on a stick and sang some songs. We turned in for the night.

The next morning it was raining very heavily. We couldn’t cook anything, so we had a cold breakfast and began to wait for the rain to stop. After a few hours, it was apparent the rain wasn’t going to stop so we went out to swim in the nearby lake. It was a lot of fun although it was raining. We ate some cold beans for the night and went to bed. The next morning it was still raining and we began to worry that we wouldn’t be able to do anything.

That night it was still raining and the ground was beginning to get pretty soft. For the next 15 days it rained and things got much worse. The Camping Ground was so saturated, that the tents began to sink into the ground. We had brought plenty of canned food that we had hoped to heat up so we didn’t go without food. Finally, my dad said enough was enough and we began to pack up. That went even worse and the ground was so wet and mushy that we ended up covered in mud.

After two days of hot showers and no rain, I finally dried out and was so happy to forget that vacation where it rained for 17 days.

I need a good reason to change my camp site. One is extreme white water rafting, and one is where you scoop dirt all day. A lot of kids want to do my site, and for the white water rafting i don’t know.
I want to do white water rafting really badly, and i have the ability to change it, but i need a good reason to change it.

For 2 points to put me at 16,000 thank you. I would assume you have the freedom of choice get up and move to the campsite you want. I personally don’t like folk tripping through my campsite for privacy reasons alone. I camp frequently along the Kern river at Hobo campground it has the same problems with rafters stopping along that area so I pick a spot that is not so friendly for the rafters to pull into.

I’m not from Calif. but the National Forest are usually a good place for young people to go and party. I don’t even think you have to pay for a campsite. I know my son use to go to one in Mi.

What is more pleasurable than enjoying the beauty of our country? My family has been camping in Utah for the last twenty years. It is a state of eighteen majestic mountain ranges. The weather is varied from snow to sunshine and outdoor activities include snow skiing, hiking, camping and ATV trail riding.

This summer we returned to a canyon in the Manti-La Sal mountain range and was surprised to see that not only were there even fewer places to camp but that more people were out camping. Of course, some of that has to do with the economy and people doing staycations. It seems nothing has changed in the number of places to camp.

We drove around for three hours before we ended up camping just off from the main canyon road. This is difficult for us since we like to camp with our dogs, plus it is also very dusty with the number of RVs going up and down the canyon. As we searched for a camping spot, we found that places we had previously camped were blocked by signs which read, “Closed for wildlife habitat.” Mind you, this range has over 1.4 million acres.

To give you a little history, in 1990 the population in Utah was 1.7 million. Today it has reached 2.7 million and our growth rate has more than doubled the rest of the nation. The projected population for 2030 is projected to be around 3.5 million.

Camping and hiking are activities enjoyed by 40 million Americans every year. It is the number one outdoor vacation activity. Camping participants made more than 597 million outings in 2008 alone. Also, one out of twenty US jobs is related to outdoor activities. Studies indicate that this industry generates roughly 0 billion annually and creates five times as many jobs as Wal-Mart.

To be fair, in Utah there are over seven-thousand improved campgrounds. Improved campgrounds are those you pull in close to other campers, but you have water hook-up, fire pits, etc. The problem for a number of campers is that what they enjoy the most about camping is getting out by themselves—away from the city, traffic, loud noises and enjoying the environment. You can’t get that parked next to other campers you don’t know who are playing loud obnoxious music and screaming in and out of the campground on their ATV’s.

Back in 2005, ATV sales were right around 900,000 units. I’m positive sales have increased since then as the sport as become more popular. However, the number of OHV trails has varied—some have been opened up and some closed. The concern about camping and ATV riding is the impact it is having on our environment, which is very understandable.

Designated campgrounds are those without immenities. This year they were so over-camped, they were practically dustbowls. You couldn’t find a piece of wood or a flower within a hundred yards. But isn’t the reason these areas are so over-camped because they haven’t accounted for the growing population and increase in outdoor activities? It’s true that blazing trails in restricted areas as destroying our environment, but opening up more designated trails based on the growing popularity of the sport may be a solution.

It is as important to plan and project further growth of this popular activity as it is to plan our freeway and highway requirements to accommodate our growing population. In 2007, the US had over 192.8 million acres. Utah currently has over nine million acres of forest land. Why isn’t it possible to provide more camp sites and still provide enough habitate for our wildlife.

By allowing us to see our beautiful country, won’t we learn to respect it more? Somehow there needs to be a balance between the environment and us.

My sister’s birthday is coming up and we’re looking to go on a cheap camping trip. Primitive camping is our best bet since we would like to be isolated but the only place I can find that is relatively close (meaning 80+ miles away) is East Fork State Park and they only offer 4 primitive campsites with a permit. Are able to camp in the woods of a random area or are we only allowed to camp in designated spots?

You might try Caesar Creek Lake State Park near Waynesville, OH. It’s about 20 miles from Xenia. Dayton and Xenia are fairly close to each other. Caesar Creek is maybe 50 miles from Dayton.

Aussie Camping Adventures – Patrol and Landcruiser – River Crossings

The camp site at Sossusvlei is quite amazing. 24 sites spread over a few acres of sand. Each site has its own acacia tree over it, a stone wall around it and a tap. The best bit is that your site is 100s of meters from the next one.

The most exciting site in the state of Florida is the Citrus Hills RV Park. They are also well equipped with the water sources, electricity and the picnic tables and patios, a one mile course for exercising. To make it a calm place large dogs and vehicles are not allowed here. The Citrus hills are also luxurious as it includes a library, gym and TV lounge. There are rooms built to play pool, bingo, cards and ping pong. Thus if you are on as plan to take up the Florida campgrounds for your holiday then CITRUS HILLS is the best where one can enjoy with his whole family.

Calico Ghost Town

On your California camping trip, try spending it in Calico Ghost Town located 10 miles north of Barstow, California. This significant silver mining town was established in 1881. Calico has countless shops and a museum. Town entertainment includes actors in period costumes entertaining visitors and tourists. The past is kept alive with trains, stagecoach rides, regular gunfights, restored mining equipment and old household articles put on display. Events in this part of California include cowboy action shooting, civil war re-enactment, Spring Festival, Calico Days, and Calico Heritage Fest.

Calico Ghost Town, which charges a nominal entrance fee, is open every day. The town provides full service campsites a little past the town’s border. Bodie State Historic Park

You can spice up your California camping trip by taking on the Bodie State Historic Park, a gold-mining ghost town located northeast of Yosemite. Aside from an occasional ghost, the once-flourishing mining camp is presently being visited by tourists intrigued by the town’s interesting reputation.

Although there is no actual camping site available within Bodie, you can find campgrounds three miles from Bodie on BLM land. A trip to Bodie State Historic Park is possible any time of the year, although the place is accessible only by snow-over equipment in winter. I would like to go camping in a legit campsite. Not one that has pools or tennis courts. I also do not want to be close to other people who are also camping. Does anyone know of a place worth going?

How about my backyard in Terre Haute, IN? (kidding) Seriously the state park primitive camping areas are really nice in the fall (Oct.- Nov.). At least they are in south western IN. Not many people around and beautiful foliage.
